Why I became a massage therapist

I thought it would be appropriate to tell you the story of why I decided to become massage therapist for the first blog entry. After being called to live in the healing Yampa Valley, I started out as many Steamboaters do, working at ski Corp for a paycheck and a ski pass. After a few enjoyable, carefree seasons of mountain life, my partner and I became pregnant. Naturally we decided to create a more stable life for our future family. A few months into the pregnancy we were fortunate enough to meet Suzanne Tully, a wonderful midwife, nutritional herbalist, and owner of Aspen Botancal's Apothecary. We immediately fell in love with Suzanne and soon decided to use her as our midwife and have a home birth. A prenatal Maya massage program was included as part of the midwife services, so I recieved many prenatal massages as well as a postnatal after care massage. My pregnancy was not comfortable and I experienced many of the negative side effects most women endure during pregnancy. However, every two weeks there was a silver lining, a glorious 90 minutes where I could lay on my stomach and my body could be in tension relieving heaven. My bi-weekly and then weekly massage sessions towards the end of my pregnancy worked miracles for my body and mind, relieving nausea and helping my body adjust to the rapid changes occurring.
After a successful and beautiful delivery to my daughter and weeks of baby bliss, even though baby and my heart were happy and healthy, my body was not. I experienced digestional pain and discomfort and my sacrum just didn't quite feel right. After my body healed from labor, it was time for my post partum massage. Suzanne worked her magic and performed a technique
that helped repostion my colon and I felt immediate relief from the sometimes excruciating intestinal pains i had been dealing with. Then she did some deep work realigning my sacrum to its ideal shape. I left this massage session feeling like i had traded in my old worn out body for one that was brand new. That's when I could no longer ignore the wonderful effects of massage.
I began my massage training a few months later at Mountain Massage School in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I have since added specialty prenatal training, cupping, and hot stones to my tool belt since becoming a licensed therapist. I have enjoyed being busy spreading wellness throughout our beautiful community one massage at a time.
